How UK time works

The UK runs on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in winter and British Summer Time (BST) in summer. GMT is the same as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). BST is one hour ahead, at UTC+1.

The clocks go forward one hour at 1am on the last Sunday in March and back one hour at 2am on the last Sunday in October. The whole of the UK, including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, uses the same time. So do Ireland, Portugal, Iceland in winter, and the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

The clock at the top of this page always shows UK time, whatever time zone your device is set to. The date changes at midnight UK time.

Frequently asked questions

What time zone is the UK in?

GMT (UTC+0) in winter and BST (UTC+1) in summer. BST starts on the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in October. See clock change dates.

What week number is it?

It is week 40 of 2026. ISO weeks start on Monday, and week 1 is the week with the year's first Thursday in it. See every week on the week number page.

How accurate is this clock?

The clock reads your device's time and converts it to UK time. Phones and computers that set their time automatically are normally accurate to within a second. If your device clock is wrong, this clock will be wrong by the same amount.

When does the date change in the UK?

At midnight UK time. That is midnight GMT in winter, and midnight BST (23:00 UTC) in summer.
