Mother's Day in the UK, also called Mothering Sunday, is Sunday 7 March 2027. That is more than a week earlier than in 2026 (15 March), because Easter 2027 is early.

How the date is set
Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is always three weeks before Easter Sunday, according to the Church of England. Since Easter can fall from 22 March to 25 April, Mother's Day in the UK can be any Sunday from 1 March to 4 April.
The name comes from the custom of returning to your "mother church", the main church or cathedral of the area, in the middle of Lent. Over time it became a day for visiting your own mother, and in the 20th century it merged with the American idea of Mother's Day.
Why the US date is different
The United States celebrates Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May, set by federal law since 1914 after a campaign by Anna Jarvis. Canada, Australia and many other countries use the same May date, so in 2027 it is 9 May. If you are sending a card abroad, check which date the country uses. Ireland uses the same date as the UK.
Sending a card in time
Royal Mail does not deliver letters on Sundays, so a card has to arrive by Saturday 6 March 2027. First Class aims to deliver the next working day, Monday to Saturday, so posting by the last collection on Thursday 4 March gives a day's margin. Second Class aims for delivery within three working days, so post it by Tuesday 2 March. Flowers and gifts ordered online often have their own Mother's Day cut-off dates.

Mother's Day is not a bank holiday. It is a Sunday, so in England and Wales large shops open for six hours at most. In 2030 Mother's Day falls on 31 March, the same morning the clocks go forward, so lunch plans lose an hour. Father's Day is not tied to Easter: it is always the third Sunday in June.
