Online stopwatch

00:00.00

How to use the stopwatch

Press Start to begin and Stop to pause. While it runs, Lap records a split without stopping the clock. When stopped, the same button becomes Reset. Once you have three or more laps, the fastest is highlighted and the slowest is labelled.

Keyboard: Space starts and stops, L records a lap, R resets when stopped. Times over an hour show hours as well.

Lap time and total time

The lap time is how long that lap took on its own. The total is the time on the clock when you pressed Lap. For a 1,500 metre race on a 400 metre track, for example, the lap times show whether your pace held steady and the total shows your finish time.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the online stopwatch?

It measures elapsed time with your browser's high-resolution clock, so the running total stays accurate to well under a hundredth of a second. The bigger source of error is human reaction time when pressing start and stop, typically 0.1 to 0.2 seconds.

Does the stopwatch keep running in the background?

Yes. The display pauses while the tab is hidden to save battery, but the time is measured from when you pressed start, so it is correct when you come back.

Are my lap times saved?

No. Nothing leaves your device and laps are cleared when you reset or close the page. Copy them out first if you need to keep them.
