When Christmas Day or Boxing Day falls at a weekend, the bank holiday moves to the next weekday: Monday 28 December in 2026, and Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December in 2027. The full list is on UK bank holidays.

How weekdays move from year to year

A date falls one weekday later each year, or two if a 29 February comes in between. Christmas Day is a Friday in 2026, a Saturday in 2027 and, after the 2028 leap day, a Monday in 2028.

Whole calendars repeat too. 2026 starts on a Thursday and is not a leap year, the same as 2015 and 2037, so a 2015 calendar matches 2026 day for day. A handy check: 4 April, 6 June, 8 August, 10 October and 12 December always share a weekday. In 2026 they are all Saturdays; in 2027, Sundays.

How the finder counts

“Days ago” and “in N days” count calendar days from today in UK time, without counting today. Tomorrow is “in 1 day”. For the gap between two other dates, use days between dates; to add days or weeks to a date, use the date calculator.

Old British dates and the 1752 change

Britain and its colonies switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1752: Wednesday 2 September was followed by Thursday 14 September. The weekdays carried on in order; only the dates jumped. Before that, British records use the Julian calendar (Old Style), which was 11 days behind from March 1700 and 10 days behind before that. The year also began on 25 March, so a document dated February 1750 may mean February 1751 in modern terms.

The finder uses the Gregorian calendar for every date, as most software does. For an Old Style date before 14 September 1752, add the 10 or 11 days first, or the weekday it shows may be wrong.

Frequently asked questions

What day of the week is Christmas 2026?

Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday. Boxing Day is a Saturday, so the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December.

What day is New Year’s Day 2027?

Friday 1 January 2027. It is a bank holiday across the UK.

What day of the week was I born?

Enter your date of birth in the finder at the top of this page. It shows the weekday and how many days ago it was.

Does the finder work for very old dates?

Yes, using the Gregorian calendar. British dates before 14 September 1752 were written in the Julian calendar, so add 10 or 11 days to them first.

Which years have the same calendar as 2026?

2015 and 2037. All three start on a Thursday and are not leap years.
