Why Singapore is on UTC+8
At about 104 degrees east, Singapore's position fits UTC+7. Until 1981 it was on UTC+7:30. When Malaysia decided to put the whole country on UTC+8 from 1 January 1982, Singapore followed to avoid confusion for business and travel: the clocks went forward 30 minutes at 11:30pm on 31 December 1981. During the Japanese occupation (1942 to 1945) Singapore had used Tokyo time, UTC+9.
The result is a late sun for the latitude: sunrise is close to 7am and sunset close to 7pm all year.
