Ordinal dates and “Julian dates”
A date written as a year and a day number is an ordinal date. In ISO 8601 form, today is 2026-274. In spreadsheets, =A1-DATE(YEAR(A1),1,0) gives the day number of the date in cell A1.
Food manufacturers, the military and logistics firms often call a short form of this a “Julian date”: the last two digits of the year followed by the three-digit day number. In that YYDDD format, 1 October 2026 is 26274 and 5 January 2027 is 27005. Some codes use only the last digit of the year, so 6274 for 1 October 2026.
The astronomer’s Julian Day is different
Astronomers use the Julian Day: a continuous count of days since noon Universal Time on 1 January 4713 BC in the Julian calendar. It never resets, so it makes it easy to measure the time between two observations. Julian Day 2461315 begins at noon UT on 1 October 2026. Neither kind of “Julian date” has anything to do with the Julian calendar that Britain used until 1752.
