How working days are counted
A working day here is Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays in England and Wales. The first panel counts working days between two dates; the second finds the date a number of working days after (or before) a start date.
- Between two dates: the start date counts and the end date doesn't, unless you tick Include the end date. From Monday to the following Monday is 5 working days; tick the box and it becomes 6.
- Adding working days: the start date is never counted. 1 working day after a Friday is the next Monday, or the Tuesday if Monday is a bank holiday.
- Bank holidays follow the GOV.UK rules, including substitute days when Christmas or New Year falls at a weekend. In 2026 Boxing Day is a Saturday, so Monday 28 December is the substitute day. See UK bank holidays for the full list.
Working days per month in 2026 and 2027
Both years have 261 weekdays and 8 bank holidays in England and Wales, all on weekdays, leaving 253 working days.

Scotland and Northern Ireland
The calculator uses the England and Wales list. Scotland has 9 bank holidays and Northern Ireland 10, so the year totals differ:
- Scotland (252 working days in 2026 and 2027): 2 January (4 January in 2027) and St Andrew's Day on 30 November are holidays, the summer holiday is the first Monday of August, and Easter Monday is not a bank holiday. See Scottish bank holidays.
- Northern Ireland (251 working days): the same 8 holidays as England and Wales, plus St Patrick's Day on 17 March and the Battle of the Boyne holiday (Monday 13 July 2026, Monday 12 July 2027). See Northern Ireland bank holidays.
For a Scottish or Northern Irish count, subtract any extra holidays in your date range from the result.
Notice periods and employers' own rules
Bank holidays do not have to be given as paid leave, and an employer can count them as part of statutory annual leave (GOV.UK). Shops, hospitals and transport run on many of them. If your contract treats bank holidays as working days, or your week isn't Monday to Friday, use calendar days in the date calculator and adjust. Notice periods in contracts are usually stated in weeks or months rather than working days; for those, see weeks from today.
