Countdown timer

92

days until New Year, Friday 1 January 2027 at 00:00

It's New Year

Friday 1 January 2027 at 00:00

  • That is 92 days away: 13 weeks and 1 day
  • UK time (GMT on that date)

How to use it

  1. Pick the date and the time, in UK time. Leave the time at 00:00 to count down to the start of that day.
  2. Give the countdown a name, such as "Holiday" or "Hand-in deadline". It appears under the number and in the message when the time comes.
  3. Press Start countdown. The page counts down in days, hours, minutes and seconds, and the tab title shows the time left.
  4. Press Copy link to share it. Anyone who opens the link sees the same countdown.

The page remembers your last countdown on this device, so it is still there when you come back. Nothing is sent anywhere.

How the countdown is worked out

The timer finds the exact moment you chose in UK time (Europe/London) and subtracts the current moment from it, once a second. The big number counts calendar days, so on the day before the event it reads 1, whatever the time. The row underneath is the exact time left.

Midnight is the start of a day, so 00:00 on 25 December is the first moment of Christmas Day. For a deadline at the end of a day, such as "by 31 March", set 23:59 on that date instead.

UK clock changes are built in. If the countdown spans the last Sunday in October, when the clocks go back, there is one more real hour between now and the event than the clock faces suggest. Across the last Sunday in March, there is one hour fewer.

Worked example: at 9am on Thursday 1 October 2026 (BST), the countdown to midnight on Friday 1 January 2027 (GMT) shows 92 days and, underneath, 91 days 16 hours. The extra hour comes from the clocks going back on Sunday 25 October.

Sharing a countdown

The link holds the date, time and name, for example datetime.uk/countdown-timer/?to=2026-12-31T23:59&title=New+Year. You can also type the address yourself: to= takes a date and an optional time (2027-06-18 or 2027-06-18T15:30), and title= takes the name, with + for spaces. People abroad see the same moment, written in UK time. The link never expires, so you can put it in a group chat, an email or a calendar invitation.

Ready-made countdowns

For the big dates of the year there are pages that roll over by themselves: days until Christmas, days until Halloween and days until New Year. To time minutes rather than days, use the online timer. To count the days between any two dates, try the days between dates calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Which time zone does the countdown use?

UK time, which is GMT in winter and BST (GMT+1) in summer. If you are abroad, enter the UK time of the event. The countdown itself is correct wherever you open it.

Does the countdown keep going if I close the page?

The countdown is worked out from the target date each time you open the page, so it is always right when you come back. Nothing needs to run in the background.

Will it make a sound when the time comes?

No. This page shows a message when the time is reached. For an alarm, use the online alarm clock for a time of day or the online timer for a length of time.

Why does the big number differ from the days in the row below?

The big number counts calendar days until the date. The row below is the exact time left, so it shows one day fewer for most of the day.

Can I count down to a date in the past?

If the date has passed, the page shows the event message and the summary says how many days ago it was.
